AKTIV Software has been fortunate to participate in a variety of exciting and sometimes challenging projects. Some of these projects include:

Media Monitoring for the BC Provincial Government

In the early 1990s when social media was unheard of, media monitoring consisted of newspaper clipping services and recording TV and radio programs. The Today's News Online News Aggregations System (TNO) developed by AKTIV Software is an intranet news monitoring service used by the communications branches within the BC Government. This sophisticated, high-priority service provides up-to-the-minute desktop access to news items from newspapers, internet, radio and television in the form of text, audio and video clips.

The TNO software is a distributed system that works across numerous servers, workstations, open source hardware platforms and embedded controllers. The software and hardware integration of these systems allows TNO to monitor media continuously and record dozens of audio and video feeds 24/7 while providing users with the ability to schedule clips to occur automatically or retroactively against prerecorded feeds.

With regular technology updates TNO has reliably provided mission critical information and services to the BC Government for over 30 years. AKTIV Software has been the sole designer, implementor and supporter of the entire TNO system.

Dynamic Generation of Print Material

AKTIV Software has extensive experience creating dynamic, high-quality print material, including magazines, newspapers, bookmarks and postcards. AKTIV Software first gained experience with this in 1994, when it created material for the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Highways. The expertise developed in early projects lead to more sophisticated automation including:

• Today's News Online -- the news stories of the day were placed in a newspaper-style PDF for distribution to information management branches and elected officials.
• CIREBA -- producing a glossy magazine showcasing real estate on the Cayman Islands.
• Trafford Publishing -- designed a process that reads book information from the database and places the cover image, title and ISBN onto an Adobe InDesign template for bookmarks, postcards and posters. These materials are then printed and distributed to authors to use as promotional material.

On-demand Publishing

Trafford Publishing opened its doors and website in 1995 – becoming the first company in the world to offer an "on-demand publishing service". AKTIV Software was there providing an on-line database displaying the books and accepting on-line orders. The complete system designed and developed by AKTIV Software allowed the merging of on-line orders and telephone orders into a central production system that would manage orders, production, and invoicing.

Software Products

Correspondence Tracking

In the 1990s many large organizations were tracking correspondence using word processors and spreadsheets which was not very effective for handling large volumes of correspondence for searching. As an alternate way to track correspondence, AKTIV Software designed and developed CLIFF Tracking, a corporate correspondence tracking system using a robust relational database management system capable of handling large volumes of data and complicated searching. CLIFF became the corporate standard for tracking correspondence in the BC government and is used by other organizations across Canada.

iOS App

Name Shake was an iOS app for anyone needing name suggestions. The app used the database from behindthename.com to display a random name. The name could be customized by gender, language, and other criteria. If you got a name that you liked, you can save it to your favourites list. If you wanted more information about the name, you could touch it to display its meaning. Name Shake was retired in 2000.

Tri-Wheel Gambling app

Tri-Wheel is an iPad application that replicates the game play of the electronic paddle wheel game of the same name.

Internet Search Engine

In the early days of the Internet, organizations were looking for ways to make their website content searchable. In response to this demand AKTIV Software developed Phantom, the first commercial Internet search engine for the Apple Macintosh. Phantom allowed organizations to make their web sites searchable, mirror their web sites, monitor competitors web sites for changes, and more. With the advent of large search engines, Phantom was retired.

Soccer Registrar

To meet local demands by soccer clubs, AKTIV Software developed an online registration and club management system specifically tailored for soccer, providing comprehensive tools to handle everything from player and team official registrations to referee and field scheduling. This platform supported online registration, enhances communication between players and teams, and included a content-managed website. Additionally, it facilitated game and referee scheduling, making it easier to organize and manage league activities effectively. The system was designed to streamline operations, allowing volunteers to focus more on enhancing the sport experience rather than getting bogged down by administrative tasks. The SoccerRegistrar system was retired in 2022.
